On Dorian Gray

5/19/2025

This time in my life, which has focused on my youth, aging, life goals, morality, the sensations my freedom might achieve, and sexuality, make for a reflective reading of Dorian Gray, and I admit I suspect I am a fan of Oscar Wilde. His semi-erotic and flowery descriptions are sweet like music and fresh fruit.

I can only express my gratitude for my life and youth by continuing to use it to experience this joyous life and the world around me. The narrative and the future-terror are illusory if I so choose, and humanity marches down all the same with or without me. But my kindness can matter, and my trespasses will hang above me if I spend the comfort of my commiserates for empty pleasures. The creative action and reaction to the conscious other is the miracle which my heart is overjoyed to witness. My love is for the shapes and colors of this useless, passionate clay.

How I adore them, how I rejoice to be one among them, singing into the same fabric that composes my felt body.

“Rah! Rah! Rah! How I Love Them! Hail Saturnalia!”
